  • Shri Bhola Nath Shukla graduated in Mining Engineering from IIT (BHU) (earlier named IT, BHU) in 1982 and M. Tech. in Opencast Mining from IIT (earlier ISM), Dhanbad in 1989. He is Silver Medalist at B. Tech. and M. Tech. level.

  • He took over the charge of Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) on 14th June, 2019.

  • Earlier, he worked as the Director (Technical)/Coal Resource Development, CMPDI, Ranchi from 01.10.2015 to 16.08.2016 and again from 17.08.2017 to 13.06.2019. During his tenure, departmental drilling saw highest ever growth in volume of about 52,000 mtr. He was instrumental in getting CMPDIL notified under Sec. 4(1) of MMDR 1957 for prospecting any mineral, which is a land mark in the history of CMPDIL.

  • He was transferred to work as Director(Technical), Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Asansol (West Bengal) for one year w.e.f. 17.08.2016 to 16.08.2017. During his tenure at ECL, underground production increased by 10.89% and dispatch by 11.52% compared to last year.

  • During his earlier stint at MCL, he worked in the Coalfields as well as at the Headquarters. He was Area General Manager of Hingula and Bharatpur Areas in Talcher Coalfield and he successfully managed Rehabilitation & Resettlement issues, leading the Areas to a new growth trajectory.

  • As a General Manager (Corporate Planning & Projects), he was instrumental in Company’s new initiatives into energy sector and infrastructure development for coal mining and despatch. Creation of Mahanadi Basin Power Limited (MBPL) Company for pithead Super Critical Thermal Power Plant (2 X 800 MW), the work at Jharsugda-Barapalli Rail link, diversification into 2 MW Solar Power Plant, emphasis on modernization and strengthening of Rail infrastructure, introduction of non-coking coal Washeries, eco-friendly evacuation system like Pipe Conveyor, SILO, etc. 

  • He joined SECL in 1982, where he was instrumental in deploying SDL & Chain Conveyor for Depillaring in 1983. He experimented cast blasting in Jamuna Opencast Mines and brought back Amlai Opencast Mines into production.

  • He joined Charcha East underground mine in 1999 where he experimented Hydro-fracturing for hard roof management and constructed strata bunkers which reduced the breakdowns of Belt Conveyors and saving of power.

  • He joined as Sub-Area Manager in Behraband UG mine having modified Continuous Miner with LHD and the mine was adjudged the overall best mine of SECL along with 36% growth in production.

  • Besides his technical acumen and having presented several technical papers in National and International Seminars/Journals, Mr Shukla was also into adventures, sports and had cycled from Varanasi to Kathmandu (Nepal) in 1981. He was a very good sportsman and was captain of IT, BHU Boating Club. He attended World Mining Congress at Rio-de-Janerio in 2016.

  • He is having a distinguished career of 37 years in coal industry before taking over the charge of CMD, MCL. He is credited for introduction of innovative technologies into coal mining.
