Shri Uday A Kaole is a seasoned professional who assumed the charge of Chairman-Cum-Managing Director of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) on 19-12-2023. Prior to joining MCL, he was shouldering the responsibility of Director (Technical) in BCCL. Shri Kaole, graduate in Mining Engineering from Nagpur University in the Year 1987 and commenced his illustrious journey in the Coal Industry from WCL, continually demonstrating his commitment to excellence, complemented by an extensive educational background, including obtaining a 1st Class Mine Manager Certification of Competencies, an MBA, and an LLB.
Over the years, he climbed the professional ladder, showcasing his dedication and leadership skills. In the year 2007 he was promoted to M1 and joined South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL); thereafter in the year 2012 he was again promoted to M2. Among innumerable achievements to his credit, the land acquisition of 1163.51 Ha at Wani Area, WCL providing 711 employments and disbursing 206 Crores in compensation stands out. He is credited for introduction of mass-production -technologies in UG and Surface Mines at WCL.
During his tenure as Director (Technical) at Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), with meticulous and detailed planning award of discontinued mines on revenue-sharing basis started. He expedited the developments of new mega projects (such as: Amalgamated NTST, Reorganized Block-E, Kalyaneshwari-Ramnagor) to facilitate continued growth in production. He also expedited construction of new Washeries, monetization of old washeries and implementation of 45 MW solar power projects.
Shri Kaole is abreast with the advanced technologies being used in the mining industry globally. He represented Coal India Limited in the ‘Mission of Indian companies from mining sector to the Czech Republic’ in October, 2023. In 2022, he also participated in the South African conference “Mining Indaba” on Evolution of African Mining: Investing in the Energy Transition, ESG and Economies.
Shri Kaole's illustrious career spanning over 36+ years is characterized by a rich blend of academic accomplishments, and a proven track record of driving growth and operational excellence in the coal mining sector. As the CMD of MCL, he continues to lead with a vision for sustainable development, steering the company towards new heights of success.

Profile of Shri Jugal Kumar Borah, D(T/OP) MCL
Shri Jugal Kumar Borah has taken over the charge of Director(Technical), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a Subsidiary of Coal India Limited, on 19th April 2022 and he was entrusted with the charge of Director (Project & Planning), MCL on 21st April 2022.
Shri Borah, before taking over the charge on elevation as the Director(Technical/Project & Planning), MCL, was posted in Coal India Limited HQ, Kolkata as General Manager(Production). Shri J.K. Borah has taken additional charge of of Director(Tech/OP) from 12.12.2022 to 01.06.2023. On 08.06.2023 Shri Borah has taken full charge of Director(Tech/OP).
Shri Borah is having 35 years of rich experience in the Underground as well as Opencast Projects and has served at different important positions in North East Coalfields (NEC) and Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Dhanbad.
Shri Borah is resident of Nagaon District in Assam and has done his schooling from Sainik School, Golpara and Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) from NIT Nagpur in the year 1987. He holds First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency from DGMS, Dhanbad in the year 1991. He had also obtained Competency Certificate in Coal Mine Safety from JICA, Japan in the year 1996 and did Diploma in Project Management from George Washington University, USA in the year 2013.
Profile of Shri A S Bapat, D(T/P&P) MCL
Shri Akshay Shrikant Bapat has taken over the charge of Director (Technical),Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a Subsidiary of Coal India Limited, on 02nd June 2023 and he was entrusted with the charge of Director (Project & Planning), MCL on 8 th June 2023.
Shri Bapat, before taking over the charge as the Director (Technical/Project &Planning), MCL, was posted in Coal India Limited HQ, Kolkata as Executive Director(Environment).
He has worked in various capacities in Coal India subsidiaries WCL and SECL and has over 36 years of rich experience in Coal Mining, Planning and matters pertaining to Environment & Forest.
Shri Bapat is resident of Pune, Maharashtra and has done Bachelor of Engineering(Mining) from Nagpur University in the year 1987. He holds First Class Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency under the Mines Act from Directorate General of Mines Safety, Dhanbad.
Profile of Shri Keshav Rao, D(P) MCL
Shri Keshav Rao is an alumnus of I.I.T. Bombay and IIM, Ahmadabad. He holds a PG diploma in HR. He started his career with a brief stint of one year in the private sector followed by two years with Steel Authority of India Ltd. Thereafter he joined Indian Telecom Service where he served for about twenty-six years.
He took charge as Director (Personnel), Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) w.e.f December 2019 and handling various functions such as Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management & Development, Corporate Social Responsibility, Public Relations, Welfare, Land acquisition, Liaison with Government and other authorities, Security, Industrial Engineering, Communication networks, Legal affairs, Formulation of Policies and Corporate level decision making as a member of the MCL Board.
He is the HR head for around 21787 workforce of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited. He has introduced various HR and IT initiatives in MCL and contributed to improving business processes through systemic improvement and effective utilisation of Human Resources. These efforts resulted in enhancing the employee engagement level and organisational productivity. During the financial year, MCL has achieved highestever 168 million tonnes of coal production with an impressive growth of about 14% over the previous fiscal 2020-21.
He has received appreciation from the Minister of Coal, Mines & Parliamentary Affairs and the Minister of State for Rail, for achieving the highest dispatching record of 6.25 lakh tonnes of coal to consumers on 28/10/2021. He was also conferred the CSR Leader of the Year award by “Governance Now” for the CSR initiatives in MCL. During the pandemic time, he has shown a proactive leadership approach and ensured all needful assistance to State Govt, Center Govt to combat the covid-19 crisis.
Prior to joining MCL, he served as a Director in the Central Vigilance Commission, New Delhi from 2010 to 2015. As Director of CVC, he was associated with vigilance matters of all organizations under the coal ministry and assisted the commission in driving many vigilance reforms. He has also served as the Chief Vigilance Officer of four organizations under the ministry of civil aviation viz. Pawan Hans Ltd., DGCA, IGRUA and Airport Authority of India.
Later as a General Manager (personnel) in BSNL he handled HR matters of around 50,000 executives. He was instrumental in the resolution of many legal bottlenecks which facilitated an end to long-pending cases leading to over 10,000 promotions within 3 months. He also contributed to the formulation of a new promotion policy. He has attended various training programmes/conferences in US, UK, France Austria and Portugal. He has delivered training courses in HR to international audiences in South Africa, IIM-Sambalpur, IICM Ranchi, Northern Coalfields Limited etc.
He served as an editor of the CVC’s newsletter Vigeye Vani. He headed committees set up to examine delays in disciplinary proceedings across various government organizations and also was a member of the committee for drafting of vigilance manual released by CVC in 2017.
He also served as secretary to the Vigilance Study Circle Delhi NCR. He has been delivering lectures on various topics of HR and vigilance in several organizations.
Profile of Shri Mukesh Choudhary, Director(Marketing) CIL
Pursuant to letter No. 21/20/2001-BA/ESTT dated 27.01.2023 of Under Secretary to Govt. of India, Shri Mukesh Choudhary, Director (Marketing), CIL has been appointed as Director on MCL Board w.e.f. 27.01.2023.
Mr. Mukesh Choudhary took over as Director (Marketing), Coal India Limited (CIL), the state-owned Maharatna coal mining behemoth on and from 23rd December 2022(A/N)
Prior to taking up the reins of the CIL marketing division’s top slot, he was Deputy Director General, Department of Defence Production, and Ministry of Defence.
Mr. Choudhary assumed the charge from Dr. B. Veera Reddy, Director (Technical) CIL who was additionally officiating as Director (Marketing) since May of this year. An Officer of Indian Ordnance Factory Services (IOFS) 1996 batch, Mr. Choudhary is a Mechanical Engineering (Honours) graduate from Engineering College Kota
He also holds a Master of Financial Analysis (MFA) degree and a MBA degree. Importantly for CIL, Mr. Choudhary is well versed in the finer nuances of country’s coal demand supply chain and of CIL’s marketing system on the back of his six and half year exposure as Director (Coal Production and Despatch) in the Ministry of Coal where his functions included monitoring coal supplies, transport logistics and marketing policies. He also served on the boards of three government-owned coal companies – MCL, SECL, NLTPL, NCL, SCCL and CMDPI.
At a time when CIL’s coal supplies have peaked to record high levels, especially to the major coal-consuming power sector, and coal demand is expected to shoot up, spurred by the increased electricity generation in the country, Mr. Choudhary’s experience will help in tackling the challenging issues.

Pursuant to letter No. 21/3/2011-ASO/BA/ESTT dated 22.02.2023 of Under Secretary to Govt. of India, Shri Sanjeev Kumar Kassi has been appointed as Director on MCL Board w.e.f. 22.02.2023.
He is a 1992 batch Mechanical Engineering Graduate from NIT Allahahad (previously known as Moti Lal Nehru Regional Engineering College). He is presently Joint Secretary at Ministry of Coal
He started his career in 1992 with Bharat Electronics Limited and has also worked with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited in the field of production, planning, and locomotive design. He joined Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in 1996 through Combined Engineering Services (1994 batch) as a Central Power Engineering Service (CPES) Group A Officer and has worked at various levels in CEA. During his tenure in CEA, he has worked in NTPC for 3 years in the field of O&M of power plant
He was involved in framing policy matters related to power generation in the country and sorting out technical problems of the power utilities at national level. He has formulated policies for adoption of new power generation technologies (such as supercritical coal fired units, advanced class CCGT modules, higher size coal fired units, etc ) for improving the Indian power sector w.r.t the current operating efficiencies, cost effectiveness and Green House Gas emissions
He has been associated with review of Technical Standards for Construction of Electric Power Stations, Design Standard for Balance of Plant Equipment, Safety Standards and revival of stranded gas and coal based power stations. His experience includes framing policy for Power Generation, Fuel Supply, Energy Conservation and sorting out technical problems of the power utilities at national level
He has attended various power sector programs in Germany, Japan, USA, China & Russia and has carried out many technical investigations in Indian Power Stations.
