Brief Introduction
About Department Washery department is situated in the MCL Headquarter, Burla. It is one of the full fledged department under control of Director (Technical/P&P) of MCL responsible for planning of washeries & deshaling plant of required capacity in command area of MCL for its existing and upcoming mines by identifying land, water, power, railway siding & linked mines etc. for washeries and deshaling plant for improvement of the coal quality. MCL has always given the highest priority towards “Coal quality”. Washery Deptt deals with floating of tender, award of work and signing of contact for setting–up of washeries in command areas of MCL for washing of coal to reduce the ash content below 34%. IB-Valley Washery at Lakhanpur area (Capacity-10 Mtpa) is being set-up on Build_Operate_Maintain (BOM) Concept. Construction of washery is under progress. Washery department is the nodal department for diversification/acquisition of stressed assets of power sector for MCL and also deals with R&D projects related to coal beneficiation in collaboration with institutions of repute and other government agencies.
About Washing Coal Coal beneficiation/Coal washing is a physical process that separates burnable coal from associated un-burnable mineral matter, also known as ash, or rejects. High ash content is inherent in Indian coals. Due to the close specific gravity of coal and ash, efficient separation becomes difficult. Washed coal continues to have ash content after beneficiation. Conversely, coal constitutes a small but nonetheless significant part of the rejects. This residual coal is a valuable economic resource that should neither be ignored nor discarded. Major washing technologies are Jigs (Pulsating water as media (Batac/ Baum),Dense -media separation (a. Dense/Heavy Media Vessel or Baths, b. Dense/Heavy Media cyclone c. Combination of above)
